acting. They directionalize our attention by deleting information and creating
systematic, habitual patterns of thinking and behaviour. Perceptual Filters are

Filters serve the purpose of deletion and distortion, and they maintain or
break our generalisations. The Preferences are about how we each of us

Perceptual Filters may differ across
contexts, and in organisations they can help to explain preferences for job
types and provide insights as to why some people are able to excel at
particular tasks that others struggle with.
Perceptual Filters are
patterns of behaviour, not types of people. They are systematic and habitual,
and we do not usually question them if they serve us well. You will notice
other peoples Perceptual Filters both through their language and behaviour.
AwayFrom-Towards: The towards person stays focused on his/her
own goals and is motivated by achievement. The away person focuses on problems
to be avoided rather than goals to be achieved.
SmallChunk-BigChunk: BigChunk people are most comfortable
dealing with large chunks of information. They do not pay attention to details.
SmallChunk people pay attention to details and need small chunks to make sense
of a larger picture.
Internal-External: The internal person has
internal standards and decides for him/herself. The external person takes
standards from outside and needs direction and instruction to come from others.
Match-Mismatch: People who match will mostly notice points of
similarity in a comparison. People who mismatch will notice differences when
making a comparison.
