Changes to NHS Structure – England and Scotland

Strategic Health Authority (SHA) - New Configuration Announced

The first announcement from the consultations on NHS reorganisation has been made regarding the configuration of England's Strategic Health Authorities. The number of SHAs will be reduced from 28 to 10 from July 1st, subject to parliamentary approval. Information regarding the planned reorganisation of PCTs is not yet available, but will be announced soon.

The new SHAs are:

North East SHA – formed from the following SHA regions

  NHS Lanarkshire
  
  NHS Lanarkshire now has 2 CHPs which both operate from Divisional Headquarters at Strathclyde Hospital:
  
• North CHP - Director Colin Sloey
• 
  South CHP - Interim Director Geoff Sage
• 
  
  These CHPs replace the LHCC structure and the Primary Care Operating Division. The 16 hospitals which were originally shown under the PCO Division have now been moved to the Acute Division.
  
  North CHP incorporates the following LHCCs:
  
• Airdrie

  Coatbridge
• 
  Cumbernauld & Kilsyth
• 
  Motherwell
• 
  Wishaw/Newmains/Shotts
• 
  
  South CHP incorporates the following LHCCs:
  
• Clydesdale
•

NHS Argyll & Clyde - Dissolution

NHS Argyll & Clyde, which had incurred a financial deficit of £80m, was dissolved in March 2006. The former NHS Board area has been divided according to local council boundaries, in recognition of the increasing co-operation between health boards and local authorities in delivering services, such as free care for the elderly.

NHS Highland has absorbed the parts of the health board area which fall within the Argyll & Bute Council area, and the remainder has been transferred to NHS Greater Glasgow.

All organisations and people involved in this change have been moved to their new NHS Boards on the database.

NHS Highland

NHS Highland launched a public consultation regarding a change of name following the reorganisation. The majority of respondents supported retaining the name NHS Highland, although the board has yet to decide on the matter.

NHS Highland now has 4 CHPs:

  Argyll & Bute CHP (formally Argyll & Bute LHCC, and Lomond LHCC from NHS Argyll & Clyde)

  NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde
  
  HS Greater Glasgow has changed its name to NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde, in order to more accurately reflect the boundary changes.

Note: Four LHCCs that were originally in NHS Argyll & Clyde have been moved into NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde as follows; Levern Valley LHCC (incorporated into East Renfrewshire CHP), Paisley LHCC (incorporated into East Renfrewshire CHP), West Renfrewshire LHCC (incorporated into East Renfrewshire CHP), Inverclyde LHCC (now Inverclyde CHP)

There is no longer a Primary Care Division within NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde, and all CHPs show under the NHS Board. One Acute Services Division has replaced the previous three Acute Divisions.

NHS Western Isles

A CHP has not yet been established. There were plans to create a CHSCP (Community Health and Social Care Partnership) but the council is not in agreement and the NHS Board may decide to establish a CHP. The situation is still uncertain.

NHS Orkney

A CHP is still not established, although the process is in its final stages - approval was scheduled for late January 2006.
